Forest Service Campgrounds

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area resides on the edge of the Ashley National Forest in the Uinta Mountains. There are many campgrounds in the Dutch John area due to the recreational aspects of the district. The nearest campgrounds to our operation are Dripping Springs on the Little Hole Road, Mustang Ridge two miles from us on a peninsula of the lake, and two others just across the Dam called Deer Run and Cedar Springs -- They are both on the Cedar Springs Marina road. One of the full service spots on the lake.

In addition to these several campgrounds there are another 10 or so up the Mountain a bit, still within good driving distance to the river, lake, and tiny town of Dutch John. To reserve a

Dripping Springs Campground
More for the river fishermen. It is located on the Little Hole road about half way between Highway 191 (where our shop is located) and the river at Little Hole. It was definitely the most used campground for river fishermen until the fire of 2002. It has been rebuilt but there are no trees left. They have planted new trees but they are still small.

Mustang Ridge Campground
Two miles north on highway 191 from our fly shop. It is a very nice campground that is situated on a peninsula on the lake near Dutch John Draw. The trees are Pinion and Juniper. The campground is walled by cliffs on most sides that drop off into the lake so lake access is limited to a few spots, but it is a very pretty area. It also has showers for it's customers.

Deer Run Campground
Across the Dam from our shop two miles is the turn-off to Cedar Springs Marina. On that same road you will find this campground. Set in fairly heavy Pinion and Juniper trees, another fine campground with showers for it's campers.

Cedar Springs Campground
A Carbon copy of Deer Run right next door. Right next to the Marina for easy access to the lake, but also easy for the river only a couple miles away.

Firefighters Campground (formerly Bootleg)
This is possibly the most used campground in the area. It lies on a ridge very close to flaming Gorge Lodge. It is in the Ponderosa Pines making it a very attractive place to stay. And it overlooks the lake near the dam.

Greendale Campground
Very close to Flaming Gorge Lodge just right next door. A very nice campground in the Ponderosa pines with open wild grass next to it. Good for sight seeing deer and elk. A fairly small area but not used as much as some others.

Lodgepole Campground
This is a secluded campground  along highway 191 on the Vernal side. It is 5 miles south of the Junction of highway 44 and 191. In the heavy pines and Aspens. Cart Creek canyon is right at the back of the campground.  It is used quite a bit by the people that want to be away from the center of activity by the lake.

Skull Creek Campground
Skull Creek is probably the least known of all the campgrounds in the area and is a very nice but smaller one. It lies right on highway 44 just two miles west of the junction towards Red Canyon Lodge. It lies in Heavy pine trees, a few people like this one best of all.

Green Lakes Campground
Very close to Red Canyon Lodge it is up in the flats at an elevation of about 8200 feet. Makes for very nice nights in the summer. There are fish in both lakes and there are many hiking trails in this area. There are also overlooks on the cliffs giving you magnificent views of the Red Canyon.

Canyon Rim Campground
This campground is just like Green Lakes, just farther out the Red Canyon road nearer the overlooks. It is for tent camping only. This is a very beautiful area with much wildlife and some magnificent vistas.

Red Springs
This is an older campground, but still in a very nice setting. It lies practically across the highway from Lodgepole Campground. Many Pines and Aspen trees give each site some privacy. A very good place to be more alone.

There are also two private campgrounds in the Green River area.

Camper World is right next to Greendale campground, and Flaming Gorge Lodge. It has meadows, Lodgepole Pines and a small lake.
