RIVER FLOW INFORMATION-FLAMING GORGE - (Extracted from the Bureau of Reclamations Weekly Report). Water Users Meeting
A five-year study plan, which has not been finalized, will look at the health condition and abundance of trout. It will look at invertebrate populations and whether the flow fluctuations affect feeding behavior in trout. Fish ability, as well as the health of the fish, is becoming an issue because the flows appear to disadvantage feeding. Western wants to find a scenario where the flows do not significantly harm the fish. The double peak flow fluctuations do not tend to break up ice cover on the river below the dam. UDWR sees the following areas that need to be studied:
1 – Young of year spawning needs;
2 – Trout redds may be desiccated. However, trout should be off
their redds by the time fluctuating flows are started;
3 – Survival and recruitment in the trout population needs to be
investigated;
4 – Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are being placed in
fish caught during electro fishing efforts. 6,000 fish have been
tagged so far.
Preliminary data from electro-fishing efforts show that during fairly steady flows the trout condition has remained stable.
Presently:
River flow at the
Flaming Gorge dam is currently running at 1850 cfs with fluctuation
in the morning and evenings and will remain at that level
until further notice.
RIVER WATER TEMPERATURES-
Around 50 degrees at this time.
AVAILABLE AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES, AQUATIC INSECTS AND TERRESTRIAL HATCHES:
SCUDS - Scuds should be olive/gray, #16-22 or smaller if you want to match. the natural micro-scuds. Larger scuds (#14-10) in Tan, Pink and Orange as attractors are also effective.
MIDGES - Pupa: brassies, red, olive, camel or black #20-24. Tie some with tungsten beads for weight (known as Zebra midges). Adults: the most common adults are black, olive, or gray. Small Adams and simple adult midge patterns (#16 to #22) will work including clustering patterns such as a Griffiths Gnat, Two Bead Midge or the local Fuzz ball.
We are seeing some terrestrials. Black crickets 10-12, black and brown ants 12-16 Chernobyl ants 10-12 , small tan grass hoppers 8-12 and some Cicadas 8-10.
SEE HATCH CHART BELOW
PALE MORNING DUNS-Late June to July. TRICOS- None.
CALLIBAETIS- None. CADDIS- Some hatches but the great evening hatch
has slowed down. STONE FLIES- Yellow Sally stone flies also early

The fly list above suggests the available trout food and their
imitations. Each week I will list the top flies that were
productive from the week before. Please keep in mind they also
change with current fishing conditions.

each person has his or her most confidence in.
H THE PAST WEEK IN REVIEW - RATED 6
Nymphs are doing well in the top section of "A" and "B" Good nymphs successful nymphs are still the slender body styles like zebra midges, WD-40s, RS2s WD-50 in small sizes below 18s.Expect to witness many more fishermen using Terrestrials at this time of year. There are some great days ahead of us.
P.S. - We welcome you to stop by for a visit with us in our fly shop located on the corner of the Highway 191 and the Little Hole Road in Dutch John. Our Daily summer hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM seven days a week .
*** FORECAST FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AHEAD- RATED 7.0 and higher. for nymphing & Streamers.
It appears the flows are going to fluctuate from for the next few days. The high water was at 4300 cfs and will be going down
*** THIS PAST WEEKS CROWD MONITOR- On a rating of 1 to 10, with one being an empty river and ten stay home. (6)
June: The water continues to alternate throughout each day like it says above. There are still a few BWO popping out sporadically and I've seen fish rising to them fairly well. The weather over the last month has been off due to the cold spell. The cold spell held up the Cicada some but we're thinking we still might see it but later, we're hoping. Many terrestrial such as ants beetles crickets are moving along the banks so expect the large dry flies to start and then if we want we can put away the nymphs.
Important to remember: Wade Fishers: There are only two access points on the upper river, Little Hole and Spillway. Everyone has to enter at one of these two areas. It's less important as to how many people are there, but what you do to separate yourself from others makes for solitary fishing. If you are reluctant to walk a little, expect to fish with others. Remember there is a very good Forest Service built trail that spans the entire north side of the river between the Dam and Little hole, 7 miles down River. Boaters: Seems there are always a large number of novice boaters trying out their river skills, not all are successful, hopefully they will improve as the year progresses. The worst transgressions: Following too close to others boaters, cutting too closely in front of other drifting boats, floating through or over another anglers fish, competing for fishing holes and fish already occupied by other boating or wading anglers. There's plenty of river and fish, let's give each other a little courtesy and room (i.e. try practicing the Golden Rule when it comes to our fellow anglers). This is supposed to be fun for us all!
These ratings are the lowest possible anytime. Weekends A Section (Friday/Saturday)= 5 for fishermen, 4 for rafters. B section (Friday/Saturday)= 4 for fishermen- 3 for rafters. Weekdays, all sections = 3
*** EVALUATION RATINGS –6-- Fishing's been 6 On occasions Denny was asked about his rating system which was used to evaluate the fishing in this report. The questions were generally things like: do you ever rate the fishing a ten? You won't see a ten from me very often, it has to be consistently incredible for a ten rating. Though we do get incredible days, we seldom get a full week of it. Other comments are that I'm to conservative only rating the river at a five or six. So here it is: 1,2,3 very poor to poor; 4 below average; 5,6 average to good; 7 great; 8 excellent; 9 superb; 10 incredible. So you can see, a five or six rating is not a poor rating and should be a great time to fish the river.
